Six Maryland Companies Receive ExportMD Grants

State program helps companies promote goods, services globally

BALTIMORE, MD (November 16, 2015) – Six small and mid-sized Maryland companies have been awarded ExportMD grants to help promote their products and services in the global marketplace. The ExportMD grant program is administered by the Maryland Department of Commerce and helps businesses finance the costs of marketing internationally, including trade show fees, brochures and travel expenses. Applications are accepted every other month and the next application deadline is December 1, 2015. Eligibility requirements can be found on the Commerce website.

emocha Mobile Health, a health IT startup, is among this round’s awardees. “The ExportMD grant will allow us to join current partners and potential new customers at the world's largest international tuberculosis conference this year,” said emocha co-founder Morad Elmi. “We can now showcase our suite of mobile health applications and take a big step towards establishing a market presence in South Africa.”

“As our economy becomes more competitive, it is critical to offer our businesses tools to help them identify new opportunities with global partners,” said Commerce Secretary Mike Gill. “I encourage all Maryland companies that are considering doing business internationally to learn more about the funding and guidance offered by the ExportMD program.”

Established in 1999, the ExportMD program provides matching grants that are capped at $5,000 as well as up to 40 hours of marketing consulting from Commerce’s Office of International Investment and Trade. Earlier this year, the Department was awarded a $518,413 State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration to help fund the ExportMD program. This is the third year the state has received a STEP grant, having previously received the award in FY 2012 and FY 2013.

Maryland’s Office of International Investment and Trade works to stimulate foreign direct investment in the State, offers export assistance for small and mid-sized Maryland companies and coordinates international trade and investment missions and trade show opportunities for Maryland companies. The state also maintains a network of nine foreign trade offices overseas, including China (Shanghai), Taiwan (Taipei), Africa (Nigeria), Mexico (Mexico City), Brazil (Sao Paulo), France (Paris), Israel (Tel Aviv), India (Delhi), and the United Arab Emirates (Dubai).
