Series is based on the best-selling novel by Laura Lippman
BALTIMORE, MD (April 28, 2022) — Governor Larry Hogan has announced that the new limited series Lady in the Lake from Endeavor Content began filming in Maryland this month, with plans for the production to film throughout the Baltimore region until October. Created and directed by Alma Har’el and based on the best-selling novel by local author Laura Lippman, Lady in the Lake takes place in 1960s Baltimore, where an unsolved murder pushes a housewife and mother to reinvent herself as an investigative journalist and sets her on a collision course with a hard-working woman juggling motherhood, many jobs, and a passionate commitment to advancing Baltimore’s Black progressive agenda.
“We are excited that Maryland will serve as the backdrop for the television adaptation of this New York Times bestseller,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “This type of series generates a positive impact through job creation and revenue for the local businesses that provide goods and services to film and television productions. We look forward to partnering with Endeavor Content in the coming months, and hopefully, on many projects in the future.”
A series such as Lady in the Lake is expected to have a significant economic impact in Maryland. To give an idea of the potential impact of an episodic television series, the final season of Netflix’s House of Cards hired more than 1,600 Marylanders and purchased or rented goods or services from more than 1,700 Maryland businesses with an impact that exceeded $100 million.
“We are proud to welcome Endeavor Content to Maryland, as it films its new limited series over the next six months,” said Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill. “With help from our Maryland Film Office and our partners at the Baltimore Film Office, we look forward to seeing a successful production and positive economic impact around the region.”
The series stars Academy Award winners Natalie Portman (Black Swan, The Other Boleyn Girl, Thor) and Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave, Us, Black Panther).
From Endeavor Content, Lady in the Lake is produced by Crazyrose and Bad Wolf America, and is executive produced by Har’el alongside producing partner Christopher Leggett through her new production company, Zusa. In addition to starring, Portman and Nyong’o serve as executive producers on the series, alongside Portman’s producing partner Sophie Mas. Crazyrose principals Nathan Ross and the late Jean-Marc Vallée serve as executive producers, along with executive producer Amy J. Kaufman, and executive producer Julie Gardner for Bad Wolf America. The series is written by Har’el, alongside Nambi Kelly, Briana Belser, Sheila Wilson, and Boaz Yakin. Yakin also serves as executive producer. Author Laura Lippman also executive produces the project.
“With an abundance of distinctive locations to choose from throughout this iconic city, along with having a talented, experienced crew base, Baltimore is the ideal location to shoot this series,” said Todd Sharp, EVP, head of production, and current at Endeavor Content. “We look forward to partnering with Governor Hogan, the Maryland Film Office, and Baltimore Film Office, as we commence production on Lady in the Lake.”
“Baltimore welcomes the opportunity to shine again as the home to a new limited series,” said Debbie Dorsey, director of the Baltimore Film Office. “Lady in the Lake will keep our local crew and actors busy through the summer, support hundreds of City businesses, and give us a chance to see Baltimore as it looked in the 1960s.”
