The Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund (MEIF), administered by the Maryland Department of Commerce, offers a state match to private funds raised in support of endowed chairs at Maryland's higher education institutions.
BENEFIT
Under the fund, $8.5 million will be appropriated by the Governor annually from fiscal 2016 through 2021. Investment earnings on the endowments will be expended to further basic and applied research in scientific and technical fields of study as specified by the bill and as determined by the
Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund Authority.
ELIGIBILITY
Nonprofit institutions of higher education in Maryland may apply for this state funding to establish research endowments and, upon securing matching private donations, MEIF funds may be distributed to the endowments.

In FY2018 the program made eight awards totaling $8,020,000 to four different institutions. The
first round of awards were made in August 2017, with
additional awards made in January 2018. FY2018 recipients included:
- College of Southern Maryland - $500,000
- Johns Hopkins University - $3.0 million
- University of Maryland, Baltimore - $1.42 million
- University of Maryland, College Park - $3.1 million

first round of awards were made in July 2018, with
additional awards made in January 2019. FY2019 recipients included:

- Mount St. Mary’s University - $1.0 million
- Towson University - $500,000
