Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund (MEIF)

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund (MEIF), administered by the Maryland Department of Commerce, offers a state match to private funds raised in support of endowed chairs at Maryland's higher education institutions. ​​


Under the fund, $8.5 million will be appropriated by the Governor annually from fiscal 2016 through 2021. Investment earnings on the endowments will be expended to further basic and applied research in scientific and technical fields of study as specified by the bill and as determined by the Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund Authority​.  


Nonprofit institutions of higher education in Maryland may apply for this state funding to establish research endowments and, upon securing matching private donations, MEIF funds may be distributed to the endowments.

In FY2016 the program made eight awards totaling $8.3 million to five different institutions. The first round of awards were made in August, 2015, with additional awards​ made in January 2016. FY2016 recipients included​:

  • Reta Hiers Professorship for Tarlov Cyst Disease - $1,053,125

University of Maryland Baltimore

  • Endowed Professorship in Entrepreneurial Surgical Science - $1,106,750
  • Robert C. Gallo Distinguished Professorship - $999,500

University of Maryland College Park

  • Paul Chrisman Iribe Chair in Computer Science - $1,053,125
  • Michael & Eugena Brin Endowed Chair in Mathematics - $1,053,125​

Morgan State University
  • Endowed Chair in Internet of Things Security - $1,000,000

Washington College
  • Andelot Endowment Fund for the Center for Environment and Society - $1,000,000
