Largest healthcare provider in Maryland and D.C. adding jobs in state
BALTIMORE, MD (February 25, 2016) – Governor Larry Hogan today announced that MedStar Health will bring 72 jobs from the company’s other offices in the region to its new headquarters in Howard County. The company is moving from its current location at Sterrett Place in Columbia to a 97,000-square-foot office space at the Howard Hughes Corporation’s new Crescent property at Little Patuxent and Broken Land parkways. The new headquarters is currently under construction and scheduled to open later this year. With this move, MedStar will employ 222 full-time employees in Howard County and 1,266 employees statewide.
“MedStar is the largest healthcare provider in Maryland and Washington, D.C., and we very pleased that they are continuing to grow and call Maryland home,” said Governor Hogan. “MedStar is one of a number of companies that has chosen to expand and invest in our state in recent months, which speaks to the tremendous progress we are making in strengthening our economy.”

MedStar hosts 10 hospitals, the MedStar Health Research Institute, and a number of health-related organizations in the area. As the medical education and clinical partner of Georgetown University, MedStar trains more than 1,100 medical residents annually. The not-for-profit health system is recognized regionally and nationally for its excellence in medical care.
To support the expansion, the Maryland Department of Commerce is providing a $750,000 conditional loan through the Maryland Economic Development Assistance Authority and Fund (MEDAAF). The company is also eligible for a number of state and local tax credits.

“MedStar’s continued investment in Howard County and their decision to remain in downtown Columbia is a great example of the energy that we are seeing come out of the revitalization there,” said Howard County Economic Development Authority CEO Lawrence Twele. “MedStar’s decision to anchor the first of the Crescent buildings is a significant vote of confidence for the success of that entire project.”
